Invited Lectureship Award
This award will support Graduate Teaching Fellows in UNC’s English and Comparative Literature program as they develop curricular materials and innovate with teaching. Teaching Fellows will be selected for an Invited Lectureship (IL) award and asked to develop and deliver up to one week of instruction (or more depending on the instructor) for a course related to their area of expertise. The program includes mentorship and coordination with a faculty member or other Teaching Fellow listed as the instructor of record for the host course. The model should create opportunities for extended guest lectures and instruction. Participating ILs will receive a stipend of $250 for developing and delivering the invited instruction.
The Latina/o Studies Program supports one of these lectureships each year. To be selected for the LSP Invited Lectureship, prospective lectureships should list Latina/o/e/x Studies as an interest in the interest form sent out each year by the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and the Writing Program Administrator (WPA). While listing these interests alone will not guarantee your selection for a lectureship, it increases your chances of being selected and makes you a “visible” candidate for selection by one of our LSP program faculty in the department.
Logistics
As part of the course request process (for faculty) or the survey of teaching interests (for TFs), individuals will indicate either 1) willingness to host an IL and two or three subject areas of need or 2) an interest in developing and delivering invited lectures in the upcoming academic year and two or three subject areas of expertise.
During the course registration window prior to the upcoming fall or spring semester, the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and the Writing Program Administrator (WPA) will review the requests. TFs and faculty are also encouraged to reach out to the DUS and WPA if they develop potential IL pairings throughout the academic year.
The DUS and WPA will use the requests to identify potential matches for the upcoming term. Matches will be determined using two criteria: 1) the alignment of subject area needs and expertise and 2) an eligibility determination following the protocols used for assigning stand-alone literature courses or TAships.
Budget
The program will develop a pool model linked with various sources in the department. Some sources may call for small requirements to be met. Faculty with research funds are encouraged to make contributions to the program. Initial available funds and any related requirements are listed below.
$1,000 funded by the University Writing Program. Recipients are required to submit to the Writing Program Professional Development Resources on Canvas an activity or assignment related to the IL that might be implemented in ENGL 105.
