Jasminne Mendez’s “Between Starshine & Clay: Latinx Illness Narratives Then & Now”

March 2, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

****REGISTRATION REQUIRED TO ATTEND. Register by filling out the form at the bottom of this page**

Lucille Clifton once wrote, “Come celebrate with me that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed,” in this presentation, Jasminne Mendez will read and perform work from her published and forthcoming books that shed a light on all of the things that have tried to kill her and have failed. She will discuss the impact of generational trauma on her own journey with chronic illness, navigating medical racism, and learning how to dismantle and address anti-Blackness within herself and within the larger Latinx community in order to heal and make a change. She’ll also explore the impact of COVID on our understanding of illness and medical racism and how her own art and writing has been affected by the recent events in American society.
