Accidental Photos, or Stories from the Optical Unconscious: A LILLIAN FÜRST FORUM Event

April 16 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

This presentation experiments with the typical academic talk. A “slide show” of mourning ritual water photographs will usher us toward an interview response to questions revolving around what confluences flow into scholarship and programming and what constitutes literary production. The presentation will be accessible both in-person (in Greenlaw 225) and via Zoom (Register here).

Dr. María DeGuzmán is a scholar, photographer, writer, and music composer. She has published three scholarly books—Spain’s Long Shadow: The Black Legend, Off-Whiteness, and Anglo-American Empire (Minnesota Press, 2005), Buenas Noches, American Culture: Latina/o Aesthetics of Night (Indiana University Press, 2012), and Understanding John Rechy (University of South Carolina Press, 2019)—as well as over thirty-five articles. Her photographic work has been exhibited at The Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston, MA, USA), Watershed Media Centre (Bristol, England), and Golden Belt Studios (Durham, NC, USA). She has published photography and/or photo-text in Typehouse Literary Magazine, Apricity, Phoebe, The Banyan Review, Oyster River Pages, Oxford Magazine, TAB: The Journal of Poetry & Poetics, Roanoke Review, 45th Parallel, Inverted Syntax, Mandorla, Huizache, La Piccioletta Barca, and MER (Mom Egg Review), among other venues.
