Duke-UNC Directors’ Lecture Exchange Series: Dr. Claudia Milian
February 12, 2018 @ 7:00 am - 8:30 am
Join us for the first lecture of the semester by Dr. Claudia Milian, Director of the Latino/a Studies in the Global South Program at Duke University.
2050: LatinX Odysseys
“2050: LatinX Odysseys” is concerned with environmental forecasts and new forms of LatinX displacements and transitions. The talk turns to the intensity and uncertainty of climate change, to comprehend ecological crises through LatinX currents of the moment. The topsy-turvies of the present––the otherworldliness of the here and now––pulse on such queries as: What does it mean to work in the field of Latino/a Studies on this very day? Or, put another way: what does it mean to be in this Latino/a Studies moment using the most current research through LatinX Studies? To “do” LatinX Studies is to observe and tackle a series of unfolding transitions precisely through that X. This “X” is not so much what Latino/Latina/Latin “is,” but what and where it is moving toward, what it may become, and what it could inhabit. In brief: “2050: LatinX Odysseys” untangles the question: What does LatinX look like through climate change?
